The Insider Picks Guides Editor, Malarie Gokey, had a chance to test the KRUPS grinder out for her guide to the best coffee grinders you can buy. Though much of her review was based on its usability for grinding coffee, Malarie noted that the unit was surprisingly easy to clean with nothing more than a pastry brush.
One buyer said that the grinder worked well for about a year before the motor died, but the reviewer had experienced similar problems with electric grinders before. This does not appear to be the norm, though.
A reviewer from the site All Free Slow Cooker Recipes tested out the Kuhn Rikon Ratchet Grinder and was impressed overall. The tester found it ground spices effortlessly and quickly. Reviewers also liked that it is easy to fill through the little opening on the front. Best Reviews included this grinder on its list of the top five spice grinders, too. On the downside, the reviewers mentioned that its performance is affected by humidity.
From our buying guide to the best pepper mills and salt grinders by Insider Picks guides editor Malarie Gokey: Peugeot has been making pepper and salt mills since 1840, so the French company knows what it’s doing. When I first started my hunt for pepper mills, I was trying very hard not to buy from Peugeot because of the high price tag. However, having tried many others before I finally caved and bought these exact mills, I can confidently say that they are the very best you can buy.
The design of the Cuisinart Electric Spice-and-Nut Grinder is similar to our top pick, the Secura Electric Grinder. The main differences are that the Cuisinart grinder only comes with one removable bowl, and the Secura grinder tends to perform better.
These mills will last you a lifetime. I’ve had mine for several years now, and they’re still going strong. Peugeot has a lifetime guarantee on the grinding mechanism and a two-year warranty on the mill itself. — Malarie Gokey
The salt grinder works a bit differently: Two ribbed plates break and crush sea salt to whatever size you choose. The salt grinding mechanism is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel for added durability. I’ve found that the middle setting is best for sea salt so that you don’t have to grind for ages to get enough fine sea salt to season your dish. Go easy, though, because sea salt is strong.
Cons: Small capacity, sensitive to water
