Transplant the seedlings to the garden on a cloudy day. This avoids shock.

Starting seeds indoors gives you a jump start on the growing season. Better still, seed propagation isn’t overly time-consuming or expensive. You don’t need fancy heating pads or grow lights for success. All you need is sunlight and a room that has a stable, controllable temperature. Once the seedlings start growing, a little water keeps them healthy until it’s transplanting time.
Change the growing container’s location to a well-lit area. Watch as the seedlings develop true leaves above the initial sprout. At this juncture, thin and transplant any rows of seedlings into individual containers.

Move the growing containers to a window that receives indirect sunlight. The room itself should have a consistent temperature reading of 65 to 77 degrees F. Leave the seeds there until they begin sprouting.
Sow your seeds according to the directions on the seed package and water the tops of the planters. Most instructions advise putting the seeds in about four to eight weeks before the final frost so that the seedlings are ready to plant at the outset of the growing season. If using flats, mark your rows with labeled craft sticks.
Obtain potting soil or a vermiculite and peat blend. This insures a healthy growing medium for your seeds that’s weed free.
Cover the flats or pots with plastic wrap. This keeps moisture and warmth inside and supports germination.
Fill the flats or pots with growing media halfway. Water lightly, and then finish filling. Don’t pack it down too much.

Once the threat of frost passes, take the growing containers outdoors to a shady spot that’s protected from wind. Reduce the amount of water given to the plants slightly but do not allow them to wilt. Every day for a week, move the containers out a little further into the sunlight.
